- FAQ&A Lessons | Making The Grade
Your Questions... Answered. How are sessions delivered? Most tutoring sessions are conducted online using a secure, interactive platform that enables real-time communication between the tutor and student. It's as close as you can get to a face-to-face session, providing the convenience of learning from home without sacrificing the quality of interaction. With the additional use of interactive whiteboards and collaborative documents and tools, students get the best of both worlds having everything organised and available online whilst having the personalised 1:1 time with the tutor. If agreed by both parties, lessons or parts of lessons can also be recorded and stored on your personal portal for reference. This is sometimes useful or revision purposes. For some students we know face to face tuition is a preferred option. A tutor will plan the lesson and create the resources to deliver in person either in a students home or agreed local community setting such as a Hwb. All lessons, regardless of whether online or face to face will have been planned specifically for your child based on their needs and progress. For any student under the age of 18 it is a requirement in line with our Safeguarding Policy that an adult be present on the premises throughout the lesson. This is applicable for online lessons also. How often are tutoring sessions and how long do they last? The frequency and duration of tutoring sessions can be tailored according to the student's needs. However, a typical schedule is one or two sessions per week, each lasting for 1 hour. For A Level and Degree students it is common to book longer sessions as more complex content is being explored. In the run up to exams it is also common to book additional sessions to work on exam technique as well as content. We aim to be as flexible as possible and will accommodate this into our tutors timetables wherever we can.
- Academic Assessment | Making The Grade
Professional Academic Profiling Assessments The Academic Profiling Test (APT) is widely used by independent schools and educational consultants as part of our admissions systems and advisory services. This test has been created to provide a comprehensive assessment of a student’s academic skills across 4 areas: English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. It is a collaboration between experts in assessment, former headmasters and educationalists, using the highest quality teacher-written test questions and adaptive technology. The APT can be used to demonstrate performance to future schools or monitor academic progress, or even as practice for other reasoning-type tests such as UKiset, ISEB Pretest or 11+ entrance exams. The APT is an online assessment which is followed by a 30-minute feedback session with a qualified member of the team to interpret and explain results and discuss next steps; whether this be admission to a particular school or college, additional tuition in areas highlighted as needing development, or alternative programs and provision. This assessment analyses and reports on over 40 sub-categories, saving you both time and money exploring where your child's gaps in learning are, hence why many parents choose to begin their journey with us by investing in it. The Focus Assessment Help your child progress by working SMARTER. Find out more about your child's capacity for concentration, information processing, and task-adherence. This assessment will help you (and your child) gain an insight into how they can make the most of their tuition and school. FOCUS measures several aspects (called constructs) that influence Attentional Control. These constructs are Consistency, Performance, Impuls i vity, and Distractions (audio and visual). It is an objective tool to measure concentration scientifically. Consistency Consistency is the measurement of the quality of reacting or performing in a similar way in terms of accuracy and responsiveness when having to execute boring, mundane or repetitive tasks. Consistent behaviour results in achieving a level of performance which does not vary greatly in quality over time. Inconsistent behaviour results in a fluctuation of the quality execution of the task due to the individual having trouble maintaining his or her focus, especially when the task at hand is boring or repetitive. Performance Performance is the accomplishment of a given task measured against pre-set known standards of accuracy and speed, i.e. being attentive to completing the task accurately and on time. Overall performance of the individual is measured in terms of being accurate versus inaccurate and being on-time. Impulsivity Impulsivity (or being impulsive) involves a tendency to act suddenly and without careful thought, reflection or consideration of the consequences. Impulsive actions are typically poorly conceived, prematurely expressed, unduly risky, or inappropriate to the situation that often result in undesirable consequences. Impulsivity is both the tendency to respond prior to the evoking stimuli being presented (i.e. guessing which stimulus is presented) and the tendency to respond when he or she should not (i.e. incorrectly responding to the non-target). Distraction Distraction is the process of diverting the attention of the individual from the desired area of focus and thereby blocking or diminishing the reception of desired information. Visual distraction – determining the impact of visual changes in the environment on the individual’s performance. Auditory distraction – determining the impact of auditory changes in the environment on the individual’s performance. - FAQ&A Student Progress | Making The Grade
Your Questions... Answered. How do you measure and track a student's progress? Following an initial assessment, we track progress through formative assessments, quizzes, and continually reviewing the student's work. These methods may vary from student to student depending on their learning style and progress. Occasionally it may be necessary to revisit a concept or method if it becomes evident that this is not sufficiently embedded. Tutors also provide detailed feedback after each session in the form of a lesson report which is held in your personal portal. Additionally, we conduct periodic reviews with parents to discuss progress, address concerns, and adjust teaching plans as necessary. Head Office regularly speak with tutors and have access to all lesson reports. Your child may also wish to share results of assessments or tests in school which will help us in tracking progress and levels.
- FAQ&A Programmes of Study | Making The Grade
Your Questions... Answered. Do you provide a pre-set program to follow? No. Our tutors work with the student alongside the National Curriculum guidelines and exam boards. All session content is specifically planned and resourced around your child's needs lesson by lesson. Much like schools, tutors may use aspects of programs of study such as GCP or Scholastic in line with your child's individual requirements and learning style but we do not have a programmed learning path which every child can follow the same way. Private Tuition vs. Online Educational Platforms Making a decision between private tuition and online educational platforms can be quite a challenge. Each has its own unique strengths, and understanding these can help you choose the right path for your child. Here, we provide an honest comparison to help you make an informed decision. Personalisatio n One of the biggest advantages of private tuition is the ability to tailor lessons to your child's specific needs. Tutors can focus on your child's strengths and weaknesses, customizing the pace and focus of each session. While educational platforms offer a variety of resources for a multitude of topics, they may not provide the same level of personalisation as private tuition. Lessons are typically pre-recorded or by slides, and therefore not specifically tailored to your child's individual needs. Interactivity & Feedback Private tutors can give instant feedback, allowing students to correct mistakes and grasp new concepts more quickly. Tutors can also adapt their teaching style to match the learning style of your child, facilitating better understanding. M any platforms have interactive components and offer automated feedback on quizzes and exercises. However, this is often not as immediate or personalised as the feedback from a private tutor and doesn't evoke the same motivation, reward or sense of achivement and celebration in their efforts. Flexibility With private tuition, you can typically arrange sessions at a time that suits your child. This flexibility can be very helpful in managing your child's schedule as well as that of family members. Online platforms offer the advantage of learning anytime, anywhere without the live element or the need to comply with any safeguarding policies. As long as you have an internet connection, your child can access their lessons, making it highly flexible for the motivated student Cost Private tuition will be more expensive than online platforms due to the personalised attention and tailored lessons. However, the investment could be worth it for the bespoke service provided. Generally, online platforms can offer lower costs because their resources are spread across many users. Many even offer free access to a wide array of courses, though premium features may come with a cost. Choosing between private tuition and online educational platforms often comes down to your child's unique needs. If your child thrives with personalised, interactive learning, private tuition could be the best choice. If flexibility and cost are your primary concerns, an online educational platform could be more suitable. Below is a helpful comparison table to assist you in weighing up what provision is best for your child, along with a brief explanation of column headings. Remember, it doesn't have to be an 'either-or' decision. Many families find that a blended approach, using both private tuition and online platforms, works best to provide a rich, diverse learning experience. We're always here to discuss the options and find the best educational strategy for your child. Explanation of Ratings: Accountability: This indicates the level of external oversight and encouragement a student will receive, which can help them stay on track. Live tuition methods score higher, as they involve real-time interaction and direct accountability. Personalisation: This is the ability to tailor the learning experience to a student's individual needs, interests, and learning style. One-on-one tuition and self study have the most personalisation, as they can adapt to the pace and level of each individual student. Availability: This is about the flexibility and access students have to learning materials and resources. Online educational platforms and pre-recorded courses score high, as they can be accessed at any time. Structure of Learning: This rates the method's ability to provide an organized, sequential learning path. Live tuition and pre-recorded courses score high because they tend to have a clear, structured curriculum. Affordability: This measures the cost-effectiveness of each method. Online platforms, pre-recorded courses, and self-study score high, being more affordable than live 1:1 tuition. Speed of Progression: This evaluates the potential for a student to progress quickly. One-on-one tuition scores high because it allows for focused, intensive learning. Motivation Required: This measures the level of self-discipline and motivation needed from a student. Online platforms, pre-recorded courses, and self-study require more motivation, as the learner must be proactive and self-driven.
